Hair FAQ: Can I Take Hair From Another Area Of The Body?
Did you know that body hair has a lifespan of six months whereas the hair on your head has a lifespan of five years? Often we put the hair on our heads and the hair on the body in the same category. However it’s like comparing a forest to a jungle; on the outside they look quite similar, however there are major differences between the two.
A commonly asked question we get at Flawless Hair Restoration HQ, surrounds the topic of taking hair from another area of the body (for example; the legs or arms) and transplanting to the scalp. While this question is very valid, the answer is a lot more complex than you think. Let’s dive into it.
Hair FAQ: So, Why Not?
To keep it short and sweet; Hair density and thickness varies from person to person… The hair on the body is often not the same density as the hair on the body. If you were to take a portion of the hair on your body and apply it to the scalp, chances are it would not look natural at all. While scientifically this is possible, aesthetically this would not be ideal.

As you can see in the image we have 4 different hair types. Image A is from the sculpt which has a longer intradermal course and one can easily harvest follicular units having three or four follicles to enhance the optical density.
Image B are hair grafts from the bearded area. These hairs are often thicker with shorter intradermal course as compared to scalp hairs.
Image D are axillary hair grafts which are located in the underarm area. As you can see, all hair grafts look quite different depending on the location of the hair. You can imagine if we were to transplant these unique hair grafts to an uncommon area, it would not provide the look we are after. After all, hair transplants are meant to look seamless.
We do not want the hair transplant to look as though you have had a hair transplant; which is the beauty of the procedure in the first place!
