The Benefits

Whilst hair transplant procedures are not usually needed, patients who are concerned about the look or texture of their thinning hair can derive great satisfaction from a hair transplant. By extracting hairs from thicker areas and implanting them into areas where hair thickness is lacking, the procedure creates the appearance of a fuller head of hair. The benefits of hair transplant procedure using the FUE method include:

      How transplants work

Hair transplants are a proven and effective approach to hair restoration that has helped many men and women boost their confidence. The cosmetic process has been in usage for almost 70 years, originally developed to reduce the effects of male pattern baldness. In the past, hair transplant procedures caused the hair to appear in large tuft-like groups that looked unnatural. By contrast, modern techniques allow for micro-precision, implanting only a few hairs at a time to achieve a smooth and natural-looking result.

Hair grafts cannot be transferred from one person to another as the body would reject them. This means transplants take grafts of your own hair, moving them to areas where they are needed to reverse the visible effects of hair loss.

For patients experiencing hair loss, it is common for the hair to be thicker on the back and sides of the head. This makes these ideal areas for harvesting healthy units of hair for transplantation. There are multiple ways to extract hair follicles from their original location (also called the donor area), which have undergone decades of development and refinement.

            F.A.Q.s

            What is a hair transplant?

Hair grafts cannot be transferred from one person to another as the body would reject them. This means transplants take grafts of your own hair, moving them to areas where they are needed to reverse the visible effects of hair loss.

Transplants are based on the premise that when hair is taken from the scalp, providing the follicle is not damaged, it continues to display the same characteristics as the hair from where it was extracted. In other words, the nature of a hair follicle remains the same after it is moved. When implanted in a different area, it continues to grow as if it were still in its original location. This is phenomenon is referred to as “donor dominance,” to represent the idea that the donor area has more power over the health of transplanted hairs than the new location. “Donor dominance” explains why hair that has been moved to balding areas continue to grow after implantation.

How much does a hair transplant cost in Australia?

At Flawless Hair Restoration, Melbourne, the cost of a hair transplant typically ranges from $6,000 to $12,000, depending on the size and complexity of the hair transplant. Factors such as the number of grafts required, the specific areas being treated, and the overall complexity of the case will influence the final price.

            Procedures
There are multiple types of hair transplantation procedures available. When considering undergoing a hair transplant, patients will often come across the acronyms: FUE and FUT, which refer to the most common approaches to hair grafting. Both approaches take hair from the back of the head and insert the follicles individually into balding areas. However, there are key differences between the two approaches.

FUE stands for “follicle unit extraction.” It works by singularly extracting hair follicle units to be re-implanted into a different area of the scalp. The procedure is relatively non-invasive and only requires a short recovery time. Unlike FUE, the “follicle unit transplantation” (FUT) method involves the surgical excision of a strip of skin from the scalp. This approach is more invasive and can leave a scar.

              Ideal candidates

Hair transplants can be beneficial for people seeking to remedy the following hair loss issues:

              • Male pattern baldness
              • Female pattern baldness
              • Alopecia areata
              • Telogen effluvium
              • Hair shaft abnormalities

Male pattern baldness is typically characterized by thinning on the top of the head or receding of the hairline. Female pattern baldness is similar but usually results in thinning at the crown of the head. These issues are common and can be rectified with a hair transplant.

Patients with alopecia areata can also benefit from a hair transplant. This is a common autoimmune condition that makes the immune system attack the healthy hair follicles, resulting in small patches of hair loss. Over time, the condition can sometimes result in total hair loss. Additionally, telogen effluvium is a type of hair loss that occurs when the hair fails to initiate its next growth phase. This can often be triggered by environmental circumstances such as surgery, childbirth, and fever. Regardless of the cause of your hair loss, a transplant may be an ideal solution.

An initial consultation will be necessary to assess your individual condition and suitability for the procedure.
