What to expect post hair transplant
Although a hair transplant is a delicate and precise procedure, it’s still considered minimally invasive. Our hair transplants can be performed by our Flawless Hair Restoration team in one day, under a local anaesthetic. Our training and proficiency with nerve blocks ensure that the procedure is not a painful one and most patients experience a relatively quick recovery time. It is essential that patients follow transplant aftercare instructions and guidelines in the days and weeks following this procedure, to assist with healing and recovery. While we totally understand the excitement and eagerness to see the final results, adhering to aftercare instructions will contribute greatly to the overall outcome.
One of the many benefits of booking a hair transplant in Melbourne, is that you will still have access to our highly experienced doctors and support staff, following your transplant. Our clinic is open six days a week and available to answer any questions or concerns.
Hair transplant recovery time
A hair transplant can be a permanent solution for restoring hair loss, but it’s important to remember this isn’t an immediate solution.
Rest and recovery are crucial following a hair transplant procedure, as we work towards the desired outcome.
While all patients will inevitably vary regarding specific timings, here is a simplified timeline of what and when to expect changes:

Initial Hair Transplant Recovery
Following your transplant, the donor and recipient areas will begin to heal in the weeks following. It is normal to expect a degree of swelling, tenderness and a mild ache. Most patients will also experience some itchiness as scabbing forms and begins to fall off. If you experience any discomfort or trouble sleeping during this time, we encourage our patients to contact our clinic or use some over-the-counter pain relief.
Patients can wear a loose fitting hat during this time if you require protection from environmental factors, but this can be discussed on a case-by-case basis for more accurate advice. It is also advised that patients regularly spray their head with a saline spray, as this helps to keep the donor/recipient areas clean, relieves itchiness and expedites healing.
During the initial recovery period, it is advised not to wash your hair within the first five to seven days.

Things to avoid post hair transplant
Scratching/picking your scabs, intense physical activity/sweating (for two weeks), and rubbing your head with a towel. General common sense applies for day-to-day recovery, but if you have any specific questions, we are happy to assist. By the end of the fortnight following your transplant, the grafts have generally attached and the risk of infection is low.
Around the two week mark following your transplant the healing process is well underway and you will begin to experience some more changes. At this stage, any swelling should have subsided, but some redness and itchiness may remain, as your scabs fall off naturally. Some may begin to see some shedding in the recipient area, but this is to be expected and part of the new hair growth cycle. Rest assured that the transplanted follicle bulbs are now embedded and waiting to grow new hairs.
At this stage if you feel comfortable in your recovery, you are generally able to resume some light-mild exercise and put your head under water to gently help wash away the remaining scabs.

The Shedding Process
Between 2 – 12 months, you will see the continuation of your new hair growth cycle and the shedding process will begin. It is important not to be alarmed if this occurs in patches in the recipient area, as these follicles are at differing phases of your hair growth cycle.
This shedding process is not your body rejecting the grafts and it’s completely normal. Donor area shedding can also occur, but this is very rare, and again, is temporary.
New hair growth & beyond
Around the three to four month mark, you can expect to see some new hair emerging. Like the weeks and months prior to this point, it’s important to remain patient. This new hair can differ in appearance due to its lack of maturity (wispy/lighter), but again, this is all within the realms of normal and what to expect. In the weeks and months that follow from new hair growth, the hair will become stronger and thicker.
Some patients will experience mild patchiness, but this will even out as time goes on. A significant change should occur around six months and you will now be what many refer to as the ‘Ugly Duckling stage’. As you approach the nine to twelve month mark, your new hair will continue to thicken and you can have your hair cut and styled as you wish – this is up to the individual.

Final hair transplant results in Melbourne
As we’ve stated throughout this blog, it is important to remember that each and every patient’s results will vary as they move through the various stages towards their desired outcome. Patients can expect to see the final results anywhere between 10 – 18 months.
By this stage, all transplanted hair should be fully mature and thickened reflecting your natural hair type and growth patterns. These permanent hairs will be resistant to further loss, but it is essential to continue with our suggested hair retention strategies to prevent surrounding hairs from thinning out.
